Here's what I've learnt after 20 years of working with  growing businesses.

Common observations

When a business is moving and geared toward selling, it never feels like the right time to stop to consider brand or marketing strategies.

Marketing (from a financial sense) is a nice to have, something to circle back to when time and resources allow. Budgets are allocated to areas that are safer and easier to measure.

But for *real
*According to a boat load of educational literature, must-read founder biographies, a thousand startup stories, how-to articles, Chat GPT, and twenty years practicing what I preach.

There’s no better time to start than now.

Marketing, like any valuable part of a business, is an investment. You can reduce your risk through proper use of strategy, budgeting, and planning.

My experience.

I started Nash Was Here at the end of 2018 with the idea of using my years of agency experience to help startups and SMEs grow. I wanted to help brands think big, plan long, and play hard.

I have been fortunate enough to work with a diverse group of clients, from finance and insurance apps [1] [2] [3], to one of Cape Town's finest restaurants and a New York chocolatier, a Canadian real estate portal, South Africa's very own e-commerce platform, the wellness retail benchmark, some very GoodBasics, an Industrial IoT company (that does actually save lives), a second generation family business in the building industry, and a mix of others including agencies, collectives, and industry suppliers.

Working in a very diverse group of companies, each with it's own goals and challenges has taught me that similar problems repeat across most businesses, no matter the size or budget.

I have significant experience in launching and optimising business marketing capabilities. I apply sensible strategies and solution-focused methods that get things done. In addition, I specialise in brand and community building through authentic story telling and content creation.

What started 20 years ago as a career in advertising, turned in to a love for solving the common business problems that get in the way of meaningful brand building and effective marketing.
